Nazareth and the Church of Annunciation
Nazareth is the capital and largest city in the North of Israel. An important city for Christians of all denominations, it is described as the childhood home of Jesus, and as such is a centre of Christian pilgrimage, with many shrines commemorating Biblical associations. The Church of Annunciation was established at the site where, according to Roman Catholic tradition, the annunciation took place. Greek Orthodox tradition holds that this event occurred while Mary was drawing water from a local spring in Nazareth, and the St. Gabriel’s Church was erected at that alternate site.
